Art deco architecture took its' name from the exposition des arts decoratifs in paris in 1925, but its' roots go deeper than that. Art nouveau was a movement that swept through the decorative arts and architecture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Cubism was a large influence on art deco architectural works as was fauvism in drawing a distinction not only between the bolder patterns of art deco but also brighter and louder. Elements can be traced to the work of sullivan and the chicago school, the art nouveau movement of the late 19 th century and the gothic revival skyscrapers of the early 20 th century.
